OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

OUR ULTIMATE GOAL: A WORLD WITHOUT ACCIDENTS

Promoting a safer mobile world is – and always will be – one of Toyota’s top priorities. Through the development of innovative technologies, Toyota remains committed to ongoing safety improvements – a commitment that is recognized with accolades like multiple IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Awards.

Integrated Technologies

In pursuit of a safe driving environment, Toyota takes an integrated approach that brings together distinct areas of driving.

Parking

Take the guesswork out of backing in and backing up, thanks to a number of technologies that increase your field of vision. We’ve developed Backup Cameras with Guidelines for backing into parking spaces, a Rear Cross Traffic Alert system that warns of approaching vehicles when backing up, and Intelligent Parking Assist that can park a vehicle virtually unassisted.

Active Safety

Active safety technologies are designed to help when the unexpected happens. Active safety technologies include Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert with audio and visual alerts as well as Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist that can lightly steer your vehicle back into your lane. Traction Control limits wheel spin on slippery surfaces whereas Vehicle Stability Control allows for better control on slippery surfaces. Active safety technologies also include Anti-Lock Brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution for more stability during braking, and Brake Assist to prevent collisions.

Some technologies, like Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, are so advanced that they can anticipate your intentions and then automatically activate a variety of safety systems to ensure the highest possible level of vehicle control and stability.

Pre-Crash Safety

Sometimes accidents are unavoidable, but we've developed technologies that can predict the likelihood of a collision, take steps to reduce damage and injury, and in some situations, help avoid an accident altogether. Between certain speeds, Pre-Collision System warns when an obstacle is detected by radar, then automatically applies brakes to reduce the severity of impact and tighten seatbelts to help protect occupants.

Passive Safety

From airbags to seatbelts to impact-absorbing body structures that channel impact energy away from the cabin, Toyota vehicles are loaded with passive safety measures. We’ve even specially designed our headrests and driver and front passenger seats to help reduce impact effects such as whiplash.

Evolution of Safety

We're continually investing in research and development to find new ways to raise our quality, working to help keep you safe. That means leading the way when it comes to packaging safety features on our vehicles – so when you get behind the wheel, you can focus on the journey ahead and the simple joy of driving.

Evolution of Safety

Toyota Safety Sense TM1

Toyota believes that no matter the destination, everyone deserves to arrive safely. That’s why Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is standard on virtually all Toyota models. TSS is an advanced suite of active safety designed to support driver awareness, decision making, and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds.

Crash protection starts with crash prevention. Packaged together in an integrated system, TSS helps address three key areas of accident protection: preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during night-time driving.

TSS-C

An advanced active safety package designed for compact vehicles.

TSS C consists of three active safety and driver assistance systems: Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beam.

TSS 2.0

Toyota’s newest advanced active safety system.

TSS 2.0 builds on TSS P and consists of six active safety and driver assistance systems, including a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection as well as Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Road Edge Detection.

TSS-P

An advanced active safety package for mid-size and large vehicles.

The TSS-P suite includes many active safety and driver assistance technologies, such as Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

First introduced in 2011, our Star Safety SystemTM features six accident avoidance safety technologies to enhance your vehicle's stability, braking and traction.

Quality Builds Excellence

Toyota vehicles are built with legendary quality, durability, and reliability. Not only does this mean years of driving enjoyment, but it also extends to your safety behind the wheel.

Always Testing

Toyota crashes more than 600 vehicles a year – for safety purposes. We’ve developed a set of comprehensive crash tests with a number of sensors at the prototype phase, and with each collision, we examine the effects and make improvements to the design. Repeating the process over and over, we are constantly creating and then analyzing possible collision scenarios.

Checking... and Triple Checking

Take our airbags, for example. Not only do electronic connections for the airbag system have gold-plated terminals, making them immune to corrosion, but every single airbag that comes out of a Toyota plant is also inspected three separate times on the production line before being connected.
